South Africa is one of the world’s most multi-lingual and culturally diverse nations. With 11 official languages spoken in 9 provinces, Cape Town is South Africa’s legislative capital and also the capital of the Western Cape Province. Here, 3 official languages are used and spoken on a daily basis: isiXhosa, Afrikaans and English.

History and Culture
The area close to present day Cape Town is where the original inhabitants of South Africa, the Khoi-San once lived. It is also significant that this is the same site where the first Europeans settled during the very early days of the colonisation of the country. Cape Town’s history has for centuries featured the blending and mixing of cultures, much of this occurring from passing sea trade. The city’s history has been marked by long periods of oppression and slave trade.

In more recent years, Cape Town’s Robben Island was the site of Nelson Mandela’s long incarceration; the same city that was to witness, with all the embodiment of joy and hope, his release and first public appearance at the Grand Parade from the city hall of Cape Town. From this point on, the first steps would be taken towards South Africa’s transition from Apartheid towards Unity and Democracy.

The undoubted attractions of the city, including its historic legacies and cultural heritage offer rewarding opportunities for exploration. Encounter both the historic soul and spirit of Cape Town, as well as the living, beating heart of our truly fascinating city, as you will most surely find it today.
